What is TheatreKids?

TheatreKids is Sandcastle Theatre’s signature training program for young people ages 3 and up.  It is designed to enable young people to be fully engaged in the creative process and to build confidence as they create and original play to be performed for family and friends at the end of each session.

Our TheatreKids programs run after school and on Saturdays for 10 – 14 weeks. Our Fall programs begin at the end of September and run until early December.  Our Spring programs begin in March and run until June.

In January/February we offer 5-week workshops in Improv, scene study and audition prep.  During this time we also prepare students to participate in the Kiwanis Festival, which takes place in April.

We also offer full and half-day week long camps during the summer and Play-in-a-Day PD day camps in select locations.

Sandcastle Theatre also presents the Performance Group – a repertory of actors ages 13 and up.

TheatreKids

Through the TheatreKids programs, young people ages 10 – 15 will gain experience in:

• voice and projection
• movement
• character development
• scene study and script work
• improvisation
• songwriting
• choreography
• stagecraft

Together TheatreKids will create their own original production in the spring session, which will be performed for classmates from the participants’ schools as well as for family and friends at public performances. The final productions will blend together all the many elements explored during the classes into a magical evening of theatre.

TheatreKids Jr.

TheatreKids Jr. , for ages 7 – 9, offers our younger actors the opportunity to explore various aspects of performance, such as character, movement and voice while building confidence and teamwork and communication skills.  Together this group will create an original play based on a well-known fairy tale, which will be performed for friends and family at the end of each session.  Our final performances are often presented at local seniors’ residences and there is no charge for families to attend.

TheatreKids Mini

The program for students aged 5 and 6 focuses on engagement and creative play and on building confidence and self-awareness.  Although this group will also perform an original play at the end of each session, we approach our final production from a non-text based perspective, using drama games and activities to explore the themes, the characters and the situations.  The instructor is on stage with the young actors, taking a role in their final production, making it easy for the youngest students to feel confident performing in front of others.

TheatreKids Sprouts

Our youngest TheatreKids ages 3-5 learn age-appropriate drama fundamentals in a playful and supportive environment.

Each 30 minute class will include music and movement to encourage active participation as students explore theatre basics such as emotion, story, and communication.
